Workshops

Broadway Workshop offers special one and two day Masterclasses with Broadway Stars and Industry Professionals for young actors of ALL skill levels. Our Workshops allow students to learn from the best teachers in the business and build on the skills they have in a positive, supportive setting.

Workshops take place in NYC at Ripley-Grier Studios (520 8th Avenue, between 36th & 37th St.) and on tour in conjunction with theatre companies and other acting programs. E-mail us to host a workshop in your town.

Annie Audition Workshop
with Telsey Casting's Cesar Rocha

Students will work with Broadway Workshop Director MARC TUMMINELLI and Telsey + Company’s CESAR ROCHA. Telsey + Company is the casting office for the upcoming Broadway revival of Annie (opening on Broadway in 2012).

This one day Workshop gives students the opportunity to work on every area of musical theater performance. We will focus on giving young actors the tools necessary to help them stand out from the crowd and bring more excitement to their auditions.

Each student should prepare one musical theatre song for this workshop. Topics covered are:

NBC Casting Workshop
with NBC Casting's Trey Lawson

Students will work with TREY LAWSON (Casting associate of 30 ROCK and many other NBC projects) on Film/TV auditions. Students will have the opportunity to work on scenes and sides from Mr. Lawson’s current and past projetcs. Afterwards, they will receive feedback and coaching to help bring their performances to the next level.

We will provide all scenes/sides for this class, STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING ONE COPY OF THEIR PHOTO AND RÉSUMÉ FOR MR. LAWSON. (Snapshots are fine.)

Dance Master Class
with Broadway's Rachelle Rak

RACHELLE RAK is back for her another master class!

A true Broadway star, Rachelle has starred on Broadway in Catch Me If You Can, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Look Of Love, Cats, Starlight Express, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Fosse, Thou Shalt Not and Oklahoma! as well as being featured in the documentary Every Little Step.Rachelle was presented with the award for outstanding achievement in the world of dance from Dance Educators of America. She has made a huge impact on the Broadway and Musical Theatre community. Students will learn how to bring out their special spark in dance auditions from Broadway’s ultimate Gypsy.

This is a intermediate level class, students should have some dance training in a studio setting.

with Joy Suprano and
Casting Director Christine Kromer

Students will work with Film & TV Casting Director Christine Kromer (In Treatment, The Wire, Lights Out, The Sitter and The A Team) and JOY SUPRANO (HBO's How to Make It in America).

Ms. Suprano will begin this workshop by working with each student on how to break down sides for TV auditions. Then students will work ON-CAMERA with Ms. Kromer. Students will have the opportunity to work on scenes and sides from Ms. Kromer’s current and past projetcs. Afterwards, they will receive feedback and coaching to help bring their performances to the next level.

Teen On Camera Commercial Workshop
with Barry Shapiro of Herman & Lipson Casting and
Commercial Actor Guy Oliveri

Students will work On-Camera with BARRY SHAPIRO the Vice President and Casting Director of Herman & Lipson Casting, whose clients include: ESPN, L’Oréal, Verizon, American Express, Papa John’s, and Advil. In addition to working with Mr. Shapiro, students will work with commercial actor GUY OLIVIERI who has appeared in over 50 national commercials.

This class will focus on how to act and audition for the camera and how to create natural characters on film. Each student will have the opportunity to get in front of the camera and work on different types of commercial auditions.

Youth Song Intensive

GLEE Star Telly Leung and Broadway Casting Director Justin Huff will lead this one day song intensive. Telly shot to stardom creating the role of Wes of the Dalton Warblers on the FOX TV Series GLEE. A Broadway veteran, Telly is currently staring on Broadway in the hit revival of Godspell.

This workshop will focus on giving actors the tools necessary to help them stand out from the crowd and take their audition and performance skills to the next level. Telly along with Broadway Workshop’s Marc Tumminelli will help students find a stronger focus to their musical pieces and a better way to connect to the material. Then for the first time at Broadway Workshop, Justin Huff of Telsey + Co Casting (casting directors of the upcoming Broadway revival of Annie, as well as Newsies, Leap of Faith, Spiderman, Wicked, Godspell, Sister Act, Evita and the NBC TV series - SMASH) will work with each student, giving his perspective of what makes a successful auditions.

SIERRA BOGGESS IS BACK! Sierra taught an incredible workshop for our younger students last year that left students raving. We were so inspired by Sierra’s passion, excitement and true gift of working with actors we could not wait to have her back to teach another master class for older students. Sierra shot to Broadway stardom playing Ariel in the original Broadway cast of Disney’s Little Mermaid. This workshop will focus on giving actors the tools necessary to help them stand out from the crowd and take their audition and performance skills to the next level. Sierra will help students find a stronger focus to their musical pieces and a better way to connect to the material. Then, Merri Sugarman of Tara Rubin Casting (casting directors of How To Succeed..., Shrek, Les Mis, Mary Poppins, Jersey Boys, Mama Mia! and more) will work with each student giving her perspective of what makes a successful auditions.

VOCAL MASTER CLASS
with Glee and Grey’s Anatomy Coach

LA Vocal Coach is back after her multiple sold out workshops this past February. Students will work individually with Glee and Grey's Anatomy vocal coach, RACHAEL LAWRENCE in this one day master class. Rachael will help students bring their performance and musicianship skills to the next level, working on vocal technique and interpretation. Students should prepare 2 songs for this class. Students who have taken this master class in the past are welcome to return for additional coaching or to work on new material. Voiceover Workshop
with Andy Roth

Join is for our Second Voiceover Workshop with voice over teacher ANDY ROTH, who has worked as a voice over agent as well as producing voice over sessions for major casting directors and commercial talent agencies. Each student will have the opportunity to work on basic voice over commercial technique and various approaches to reading commercial voice over copy. Mr. Roth will focus on how to best approach voice acting auditions and the techniques that will help young actors stand out from the crowd. Finally each student will have one on one time recording a 1-track voice over demo in the recording studio. We will send you (via e-mail) an mp3 of your best take following the class!

All students will be part of the class and instruction section of workshop (10 - 11:45 a.m.) and will be scheduled for a private voice over recording session (11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.). Students will be released according to their recording slot.

ANDY ROTH After many years as the in-house casting director for Cunningham Escott Sleven and Doherty (CESD), one of the country's top commercial talent agencies, Andy struck out on his own. Since then he has been working for many of the biggest advertising agencies, casting houses and production companies in the world.Specializing in voice over, Andy Roth is a casting director with almost two decades in the entertainment business. In his casting career, he has served as casting director on thousands of projects ranging from commercials, animated films and television series, to documentaries and video games. As a teacher, his resume boasts some of the biggest acting schools in the country including NYU and Rutgers and Syracuse University. His roster of students includes many celebrities, and some of the most successful voices working today.

Students will start the day with an improv acting workshop taught by DONNA VIVINO (currently in Wicked on Broadway), then students will work with KRISTY CATES who has starred as Elphaba on Broadway, on Tour and in the Chicago company of Wicked in a musical theatre song coaching workshop. Finally students will learn music & choreography directly from the Broadway production of Wicked with Wicked Dance Captain: JAMES TABEEK.

As with all Broadway Workshop one day master classes, the Wicked Workshop will focus on all areas of performing, but this class will be specifically geared to Broadway's number one musical! Each student should prepare one musical theatre song of their choice for this class. Topics covered are:

Students will take part in a full day of musical and theatrical workshops at TELSEY + COMPANY CASTING (New York's top casting office. Broadway Projects include: Annie, Addams Family, Wicked, Sister Act, Memphis, Spider-Man, Rock of Ages and TV Projects include: SMASH (NBC), The Big C (Showtime) and A Gifted Man (CBS).

Students will split into 4 small groups (by age) and take master classes with Broadway star and Tony® Award Winner - ALICE RIPLEY (Next to Normal), PATRICK GOODWIN (Casting Director at Telsey + Company), CESAR ROCHA (Casting associate at Telsey + Company, Dance Moms), MARC TUMMINELLI (Director of Broadway Workshop) and Guest Broadway Choreographer (TBA).

The day-long intensive will focus on 16 and 32 bar audition cuts, song interpretation, dance auditions, acting and cold reading. Song Intensive with Seth Rudetsky

Students will work with famed Broadway coach and Sirius Satellite Radio star, SETH RUDETSKY and Broadway Workshop Director MARC TUMMINELLI on 1-2 songs of their choice in this one day intensive. Seth and Marc will also look through each student’s “audition book” and help them make good choices on what works and what might not be showing them off in the best light. We will also suggest new song choices that might be the perfect fit. Seth and Marc will help students find strong acting focuses for their audition pieces and help find new ways to perform them. This is an amazing workshop for students who are auditioning professionally or need help preparing for upcoming college auditions.

Sierra Boggess made her Broadway debut in the title role of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. She has the distinction of having played Andrew Lloyd Webber’s heroine Christine Daae twice: in the Las Vegas mounting of The Phantom of the Opera and in the West End premiere of the hit musical’s sequel, Love Never Dies. Boggess returned to Broadway as an opera student in Master Class and snagged the leading role in Rebecca coming to Broadway in 2012. Sierra will star as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera for the live broadcast from Royal Albert Hall in London.

Film & TV Casting Workshop
with Joy Suprano & Clint Alexander

Students will work with Joy Suprano (currently starring on HBO's How To Make It In America, graduate of the Juilliard School) and FOX casting director Clint Alexander. Ms. Suprano will begin this workshop by working with each student on how to break down sides and scripts for film and television auditions.

Then students will work ON-CAMERA with Mr. Alexander. Students will have the opportunity to work on scenes and sides from Mr. Alexander’s current and past projects. Afterwards, they will receive feedback and coaching to help them take their on-camera performances to the next level.

Billy Elliot Audition Workshop
with Resident Director - Gina Rattan

Join us for this special opportunity to work with Billy Elliot Resident Director Gina Rattan. Students will work with Ms. Rattan on how to prepare the perfect Billy Elliot audition. NIKKI BLONSKY IS BACK! Nikki shot to stardom playing Tracy Turnblad opposite John Travolta in the film version of Hairspray. Last year Nikki starred in ABC Family’s Huge and in the Off- Broadway hit Love, Loss and What I Wore at The Westside Theatre. This is the first time Miss Blonsky has taught an On Camera workshop for us! This Workshop will focus on how to act and specifically how to better audition for film and television. Students will have the opportunity to work on scenes and sides from ABC, NBC, CBS, NICK and DISNEY CHANNEL projects. Student will receive feedback and coaching to help them bring their on-camera performances to the next level. Miss Blonsky will share her inside knowledge from working on the sets of Hairspary, Huge, Ugly Betty and Queen Sized to help the students reach their full potential.

Musical Theatre Master Class

Tony® Winner Daisy Eagan

Students will work with top NY youth agent David Doan of Generation TV Talent Agency and Tony® Award Winner Daisy Eagan. Daisy won a 1991 Tony® Award for her performance as Mary in The Secret Garden, making her the youngest actress to ever receive that honor. This master class gives students the opportunity to work on audition songs with one of the most successful child actors and Broadway Workshop Director Marc Tumminelli. Finally, students will have an opportunity to have a mock audition for Talent Agent David Doan. VOICE OVER WORKSHOP with Andy Roth

Join us for our first ever Voice Over Workshop with voice over teacher Andy Roth, who has worked as a voice over agent as well as producing voice over sessions for major casting directors and commercial talent agencies. Each student will have the opportunity to work on Basic voice over commercial technique and various approaches to reading commercial voice over copy. Mr. Roth will focus on how to best approach voice acting auditions and the techniques that will help young actors stand out from the crowd. Finally each student will have one on one time recording a 1-track voice over demo in the Hyperbolic recording studio. Your best take will be sent to as a MP3 following the class!

All students will be part of the class and instruction section of workshop (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.) and will be scheduled for a private voice over recording session (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.). Students will be released according to their recording slot.

Andy Roth - For over fifteen years Andy Roth has run voice over casting sessions for some of the biggest casting directors and commercial talent agencies in the business. His unique approach to voice over training has given hundreds of artists the ability to quickly and easily assess any copy in any situation. Andy’s alumni boast some of the biggest names in the voice over industry as well as some of the most recognizable names in television and film. Andy began his career in the early 90s in the voice over department of the Cunningham Escott Dipene Talent Agency (now CESD). His expertise is in not only in the artistic end of the voice over world, but the technical and production side as well. American Idol and Broadway Superstar Diana Degarmo joins us for this very special workshop. This class will focus on Pop, Rock, and R&B musical auditions. Diana DeGarmo shot to stardom at the age of 16 as the runner up on the 3rd season of American Idol. Following American Idol, Diana released her single “Dreams” which became one of the best selling singles of 2005. She recorded her debut album Blue Skies with RCA Records. Diana toured the United States as part of American Idols Live and in 2005, Diana went on a USO tour to entertain the troops in 13 countries overseas, including Afghanistan and Iraq. Diana made her Broadway debut in Hairspray as Penny Pingleton. Following Hairspary, Diana performed the lead in the 2006 national tour of Brooklyn: The Musical. Recent theatre credits include; Dorothy in a tour of Oz the Musical, the LA production of the musical revue Back to Bacharach and David, The Lyric production of Joseph…. Currently Diana is starring as Sarah in the Off Broadway hit musical Toxic Avenger at New World Stages.

This one day Workshop gives students the opportunity to work on every area of musical theater performance. Aileen Quinn has had a diverse career for over 20 years working in Film, TV, Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regional Theatre, Voice overs and Recordings. At the age of 9 Aileen shot to stardom when she took on the title role in the 1982 film version of Annie starring Carol Burnett and Albert Finney. Some of her favorite roles include: Tessie in the Broadway Production of Annie, Princess Zora in the film Frog Prince, April Coregory in the world premier Irish play That Was Then, Molly in the regional production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Chava in the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof, Bet in the Papermill production of Oliver and more recently Annette in the 1st National Tour of Saturday Night Fever. Aileen graduated with honors from Drew University and is currently a drama professor at Monmouth University.
