BROADWAY WORKSHOP – SUMMER STAGE is a 7-day performance based theater program in New York City taking place at Baruch Performing Arts Center at Baruch College (55 Lexington Ave) from July 10-16. Students cast in the SUMMER STAGE will have the opportunity to be part of a workshop style production of a newly released cut-down version of an established musical. This audition only program is open to students ages 12-18 with a strong passion for the performing arts.

In 2023, Students selected for the SUMMER STAGE will all be part of the Broadway hit musical MEAN GIRLS (JR).

Students must audition to be placed in the SUMMER STAGE program. On the first day of the program, students will audition for their roles in the production. Following placement auditions on day 1, students will find out what roles they are playing and begin rehearsals. SUMMER STAGE will present two performances of MEAN GIRLS JR in our off-Broadway theater venue – Baruch Performing Arts Center.

Audition video submission will be due by April 1, 2023. Students will be notified if they have been selected to be part of SUMMER STAGE by Tuesday April 4, 2023.

For auditions: Students will need to sing a song of their choice that shows off their vocal ability as well as their personality. Songs should be cut down to 16 or 32 bars (around 1-2 minutes in length). Audition songs should be sung with backing track or live accompaniment. Please try to avoid acapella vocal auditions. Please begin your video by slating, name, age, and where you are from.

MEAN GIRLS JR. is the all new cut down version of the hit Broadway musical by Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin. Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign with Cady going undercover as an aspiring Plastic. When the lines between the real Cady and her Plastic self get blurred, she must find her way back to herself and her true friends.

All students must audition to be accepted into the program. On the first day, we will have role placement auditions and we will cast the show based on those auditions. We have selected a show that has plenty of role options. We cannot promise that any one particular person will be cast in a leading role. We do, however, guarantee that every cast member will be featured. As with every Broadway Workshop program, we believe that every actor — regardless of the “size” of their part — deserves a moment to shine. This is an ensemble experience and the training of putting together a musical in a limited time is an invaluable experience for every actor who is part of our cast. We focus on challenging each student to step up to the plate with whatever role they are given.

The show will be presented in “Workshop Style”. That means there will be minimal production elements. Full casts will mostly remain on stage for the entire show. There will be some simple costume and prop elements, scenic projections, and professional lighting. The goal is to present our SUMMER STAGE productions in a clean, clear manner, while still staging the show with full vocals and choreography. All scripts will be memorized. Performances will be attended by family, friends and industry guests (including NYC Casting directors and agents and managers).

Throughout each day, students will rehearse the show in both the studio and theater space at Baruch Performing Arts Center learning scenes, choreography and vocals in preparation for the final presentations. SUMMER STAGE will be lead by professional Directors and Choreographers who will challenge students to take the next step in their performance and rehearsal skills.

Tickets to the final presentations are available for purchase to parents, friends, and general public for $12.00

Students who qualify may submit a scholarship application for a partial or full scholarship through Project Broadway. All scholarship forms must be sent in advance of video submissions and are subject to availability and approval process. Click HERE for our scholarship form.
